Royalty visits MG plant at Longbridge

His Royal Highness The Duke of York visited MG Motor UK and saw the technology and skills that go into designing and building new cars.

His Royal Highness’ visit was part of a tour of high value technology companies in the West Midlands and Warwickshire, recognition of the strong pedigree of manufacturing and technology within the region. The Duke, who has a particular focus on science and engineering, toured the European Design Centre and the Technical Centre at the MG Birmingham site. His Royal Highness had an exclusive view of some of the exciting, future MG models now under development.

The Duke saw a demonstration of some of the sophisticated computer design tools recently installed in a new Visualisation Suite. These hi-tech aids allow designers and engineers work in both two dimensions and 3D and improve the quality and efficiency of model development. His Royal Highness also saw the MG6 GT and MG6 Magnette models, which were designed and engineered at the Birmingham site. In the on-site Conference Centre The Duke of York signed the historic visitors’ book. His Royal Highness’ signature came just after the last entry of China’s Premier Wen Jiabao who visited MG in June. David Lindley, MG Motor UK’s Deputy Managing Director, presented The Duke with a scale model of the MG6 to mark his visit.

His Royal Highness visited MG’s parent company, SAIC, in Shanghai in October and last year presented the firm with the Chinese Investor of the Year Award in recognition of a capital investment of more than £45-million at the MG Birmingham Lowhill Lane plant.
