CX-5 updates

Letter two (2)1I’ve attached a scan of the letter that I received from Mazda concerning a CX-5 recall.

I’m not sure that I understand the full implications of this issue, but at least they are dealing with it. I didn’t see any mention of this in the recall section of this month’s magazine, so maybe you will want to include it next month?

Although, as I have mentioned previously, I don’t do journeys shorter than ten miles, my engine oil level is now on the upper marker on the dipstick, although nowhere near the danger X mark.

Interestingly, when I called in to my Mazda dealer recently about the detachable tow hitch, I managed to speak with the same technician that I have spoken to before on this subject.

He told me that the long awaited software upgrade was now being carried out on CX-5s and he genuinely felt that it was worthwhile.

He said that it not only addressed the DPF regeneration issue, but also that it slightly improved engine torque and mpg, both of which are already excellent. My journey averages have now gone up to 54mpg.


The letter from Mazda, mildly but carefully edited, is as follows:

“During routine quality checks it has been found that on a certain number of Mazda CX-5 vehicles exhaust gas could damage the protective barrier inside one of the gas sensors on the vehicle. Failure could cause the following to occur:

– The engine warning light may illuminate
– The i-stop function may not work
– There may be excessive shift-shock on vehicles fitted with automatic transmission

We would ask that you contact your local Mazda dealer asap to arrange for a modified sensor to be fitted to your vehicle, which will take approximately 30 minutes, and can therefore be fitted while you wait. We regret any inconvenience caused, however in the interests of the reliability of your Mazda, it is important that this work is carried out without delay.”

At the date of writing there is no posting of this recall as yet on the government websites, the reason for which I cannot explain, other than Whitehall delays.

I’ve now heard from you that the software update will be performed with your next service, due in September. I am glad that the car seems to be going ok, with no further sump oil level increase, and the news on the software update sounds promising.

Hopefully they now have this DPF regeneration problem sorted. Keep me posted!
