Today we announce the results of the 2022 Diesel Top 50 in the December 2022 edition of Diesel&EcoCar magazine, which is now on sale. Earlier this year we revealed the Electrified Top 50, and now we have great pleasure in revealing the Diesel Top 50.
Our team of highly respected writers have tested more than 100 new diesel cars over the past year, each of them rigorously assessed, scored, and reported upon to our loyal readership. When we created the Top 50 format six years ago, we wanted to move away from the predictable format for Car of the Year awards, where everyone’s a winner, advertising spend can largely be a deciding factor, and it becomes a tick box exercise. Our Top 50 delivers praise for the very best diesel cars on sale today and is calculated by evaluating the assessment made by the writer at the time of the test. The formula delivers a list of the best Top 50 diesel cars available for sale in the UK. All of the cars are appraised in real-world conditions and driven and assessed with our target audience in mind. Each key area of the vehicle, from the user-friendliness of the infotainment system to the efficiency of the drivetrain, is carefully reviewed and benchmarked against the class best.
The car industry has had another unusual 12 months, hit by supply problems resulting from Covid-19, semi-conductor chip shortages and issues associated with the Ukraine war. But despite this, there’s been a steady flow of hot new metal hitting the showrooms, and we rate the best diesel-powered vehicles on sale today.
We are very proud to announce that the car in the number one spot and crowned the Diesel&EcoCar Diesel Car of the Year 2022 is the DS 4. The sharp-suited winner grabbed top billing for its eye-catching looks, luxurious cabin and for the way that it pampers its occupants. No other car this year impressed our test team more than the DS 4, and we’re very proud to announce it as our 2022 Diesel Car of the Year, as well as awarding it the title of Best Diesel Medium Car 2022.
Revealing the Diesel Top 50 line-up, Ian Robertson, Editor of Diesel&EcoCar magazine said: “It’s been another extremely challenging year for the motor industry, and Diesel&EcoCar magazine has evaluated and assessed every new diesel car that is on sale today. Our definitive list of the very best models on sale has culminated in the announcement of the Diesel Top 50 today. It gives me enormous pleasure to announce the winner of this year’s awards, with the DS 4 grabbing the title of 2022 Diesel&EcoCar magazine Diesel Car of the Year 2022, as well as grabbing the Best Medium Diesel Car award, too.”
Coming in at second place, the Skoda Octavia is awarded the title of Best Medium Diesel Estate Car, with Peugeot’s 3008 sitting in third place, and grabbing the accolade for being Best Medium Diesel SUV. The Skoda Superb at number four is honoured for being the Best Large Diesel Car and Best Large Diesel Estate Car, while the Jaguar XF is in at number five and wins the Best Executive Diesel Car award.
The Skoda Kodiaq was highly praised for being the Best Large Diesel SUV, and securing the number six spot, while the new Range Rover grabbed the prize for Best Super Luxury Diesel SUV and snatched seventh place. Land Rover’s superb new Defender wins the title of Best Luxury Diesel SUV, with the BMW 4 Series celebrated for being the Best Compact Executive Diesel.
